IT Manager

Bondo Pride Hotel

Bondo Pride Hotel Limited is a reputable 3-star hotel in the heart of Bondo town within Siaya County. It is arguably one of the most popular hotels in Kenya's western region. The hotel offers a famed restaurant, seminar facilities, party venues, a swimming pool, a gym, two bars, and 51 luxurious rooms. Its monthly revenue is a little over Kshs. 2 million.

As the IT Manager, I’m charged with the responsibility of overseeing the hotel’s IT-related operations and ensuring the reliability of the IT infrastructure to facilitate the day-to-day operations of all departments. My key roles and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Managing the entire hotel’s IT infrastructure for seamless operations for both guests and staff; this includes the workstations, shared peripherals, POS and the network.

- Ensuring the integrity of day-to-day IT-related operations to protect against malicious actors by setting up and monitoring cybersecurity safeguards.

- Installing, configuring, expanding and maintaining IT hardware equipment and peripherals including servers, workstations, POS systems, internet routers, access points and printers to ensure their peak performance for day-to-day operations.

- Providing fast technical assistance to staff and guests in resolving and troubleshooting software, hardware and network connectivity issues.

- Creating detailed records of IT-related issues to facilitate preventive maintenance.

- Installing new door systems, software and hardware upgrades and ensuring the timely completion of IT projects.

- Consulting with management to upgrade obsolete and old IT infrastructure in line with the developing and dynamic nature of computer software, hardware and network equipment.

As the social media manager, I’m responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive digital marketing strategy to enhance the hotel’s online presence and engagement. My key roles and responsibilities include:

- Creating, curating, and managing engaging social media content (photos, videos, and written posts) on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, ensuring alignment with the hotel’s brand identity.

- Developing and implementing a results-driven social media strategy to increase brand awareness, website traffic, and direct bookings, with regular performance analysis to refine strategies.

- Fostering positive online engagement by promptly responding to comments, messages reviews and building relationships with guests.

- Staying updated on social media trends and industry best practices, adapting strategies to keep the hotel competitive and relevant.

- Monitoring the hotel’s online reputation by addressing reviews and promoting positive guest experiences, ensuring brand consistency across platforms.

- Promoting hotel events, offers, and packages through creative campaigns, coordinating with sales and events teams for maximum impact.

African Leadership Xcelerator (ALX) Africa

ALX is a pan-African leadership accelerator aimed at creating 3 million ethical and entrepreneurial leaders by the year 2030 who will catalyze the growth of Africa. It adopts experiential and project-based learning.

At the end of the intensive program, one has the following 21st-century skills; Self-Leadership, Systems-Leadership, People-Leadership, Critical Thinking, Effective Communication, Data-Based Decision-making, Planning & Execution, and, Innovation & Entrepreneurship. The program currently runs in Nairobi, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos, and Casablanca.

As part of ALX coursework, I worked on several teams as a consultant on real-world projects for ALX's affiliate organizations and companies. The work largely involved diagnosing the said affiliates' processes to solve problems and obstacles to their growth. We'd then formulate solutions to help them streamline their operations and/or roll out new products. Some of the organizations I directly worked with include; the Nairobi County Government, VSO International, Wazi Counselling, ALX, and Mango Solar.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is situated in Juja, 36 kilometres northeast of Nairobi, along Nairobi-Thika Highway. It was started in 1981 as a Middle-Level College (Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture and Technology (JKCAT)) by the Government of Kenya with generous assistance from the Japanese Government.

As a Computer Lab Technician at JKUAT Nakuru, I was responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of computer labs across the campus, providing technical support to students, faculty, and staff. My key roles and responsibilities included:

- Overseeing computer lab operations to ensure all hardware and software necessary for learning are up-to-date and functioning properly.

- Providing fast technical support to students, faculty, and staff by efficiently resolving hardware, software, and network connectivity issues.

- Installing and updating legitimate and malware-free software applications for various academic departments.

- Assisting in network management to ensure reliable internet access in collaboration with the campus IT department.

- Ensuring the integrity of day-to-day IT-related operations to protect against malicious actors by setting up and monitoring cybersecurity safeguards.

- Keeping an accurate inventory of lab equipment and supplies.

- Coordinating lab usage schedules for classes.

- Performing routine and preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on lab equipment, managing repairs, and escalating to the Chair of the IT department for complex issues.

- Maintaining detailed records of lab usage and incidents, and providing regular detailed reports to the Chair of the IT department.

- Working closely with teaching staff to understand their technical needs and support campus-wide IT projects.

Taught Microsoft Office packages to 8 post-high school students with no prior knowledge of computers. The classes were largely practical with minimal theory. Through this learning approach, I equipped them with the necessary IT skills that are instrumental in flourishing in this digital age.
